Financial Planning and Literacy

On October 13th 2012, the Rotaract Club of Central POS rolled out its 3rd Professional Development Seminar geared towards educating members on Financial Literacy and Planning. As young adults with individual goals and aspirations, being financially sound is a common and critical element in making our dreams a reality. Rotarian Eric Adams volunteered to share his expertise in this field and he was recruited to facilitate the seminar. He captured our attention almost instantly as he revealed some interesting facts about financial planning as it related to Gender.
Speaking to a female audience, it was an eye-opener for us as he reported that:
The presentation was informative, fun and interactive; the members asked many questions to which Rotarian Eric was nothing short of excellent in answering. We were now better equipped with the tools and techniques to make more informed decisions with our Financial Planning.
Once again, our Rotarians continue to exceed our expectations!

Substance Abuse:
Substance Abuse:
- Definition of substance abuse – “indiscrete or unprescribed use of any prohibited psychoactive substance, alcohol, illegal drugs, controlled drugs, over the counter drugs, inhaled, injected or taken by mouth or otherwise.”
- Classification of psychoactive drugs;
- Opioids
- Depressants
- Stimulants
- Cannabis
- When St. Ann’s was established it was for the age group 25 - 40 years, now it has changed to 15 - 25 years with an entire ward dedicated to marijuana psychosis. It has become a real problem among young people because they do not see how harmful the drug can be.
- Marijuana removes 5% of cognitive reasoning in the first bout of psychosis.
- In the second bout of psychosis a person loses double, therefore 10% of cognitive reasoning.
- Marijuana affects persons’ health, social and occupational functions.
- Over 70% of offenders are involved in drug abuse. Offenders range across the board from petty theft to rape and murder.
- There are not enough facilities in Trinidad and Tobago to assist in the fight against substance abuse.
