Our sponsor for November 2012 -
4th Annual Soup Fest (Nov 18 2012)

This event was held by the five (5) Port of Spain Rotary Clubs on Sunday November 18,
2012 at the St. John’s Ambulance Hall, Wrightson Road. This is a fund raising
project with particular emphasis on Rotary Foundation and it support for the fight to rid
the world of polio. This year, as in past years, soups were supplied by several well-known hotels and restaurants. Rotarians from the clubs also contributed to the wide variety of soups on the day. The hall was decorated in Rotary’s colours of blue and yellow and the banners of clubs adorned the hall. Those attending were entertained by the young and vibrant Silver Stars stage side and the resident DJ filled in very nicely. Needless to say that it was an enjoyable evening spent among Rotarians and friends.

RC-CPOS Lunch Meeting - Guest Speaker - Dr. Geoff
Frankson (Nov 22 2012)

“What You’re Going to Die From”
Dr Frankson spoke very honestly about the devastating impact of lifestyle diseases on
people’s wellbeing and quality of life. He described how in the last century we
developed vaccines and antibiotics to treat non-communicable and environmentally
sourced diseases such as small pox or tetanus, and expected doctors to cure all ills, but in the 21st century we must take personal responsibility for our own health. He explained the detriment on society as deteriorating health leads to declining productivity and economic output. One such lifestyle illness is diabetes which impacts 1/5 people in Trinidad, of which 20% already have advanced symptoms when they are diagnosed, and has led to an alarming number of leg amputations annually – 600-700. The concept of wellness is that one should be as healthy as possible for as long as possible, dying quickly at an old age. He recommends that people don’t wait to get sick and then seek a doctor’s help, but become informed and healthier early to ensure a long and healthy life. This includes exercise and maintenance of healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels through diet.
